Smallworld has now turned
its attention to the public sector, including municipalities,
water/wastewater, and transportation. We are looking for enterprise-wide
projects with forward-thinking organizations that will provide
us with challenging opportunities to implement state-of-the-art
systems in these areas. Examples of public sector organizations
which have already implemented Smallworld successfully include
the City of San Diego Water Utilities,
the Helix Water District, and the City of Jackson, TN. One
of the primary reasons why these customers have achieved such
high levels of success is that Smallworld goes well beyond
other GIS products in its ability to integrate spatial information
management and business processes, resulting in higher functionality
and return on investment.
Since existing terminology such as GIS or AM/FM is too
limiting to accurately describe what Smallworld products
can provide to the enterprise, Smallworld is now regarded
as a Spatial Resource Planning (SRP) company, which better
describes our focus on developing mission critical business
systems with a spatial component. While GIS is at the core
of the spatial element, SRP better captures the essence of
Smallworlds present and future direction of providing
enterprise-wide database software and applications. Some of
the features that make Smallworld an excellent choice for
public sector organizations include:
- An
object-oriented data model and development environment,
which provide invaluable tools for analyzing and maintaining
complex spatial databases. In conjunction with a fully integrated
computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tool, Smallworlds
rapid application development (RAD) capabilities help customers
quickly respond to competitive and regulatory pressures.
- An
innovative transaction management system. All users in the
enterprise may access the entire database at any time, allowing
multiple versions to be simultaneously evaluated without
affecting other users or locking them out of the database.
Once a new version is completed, it can automatically be
merged into the master database.
- Network
management and analysis tools that are unmatched in the
industry. Smallworld stores all data in one seamless database,
allowing extremely large, complex networks to be easily
maintained and analyzed.
- Seamless
communication with external databases and legacy systems.
Smallworld can be used to integrate databases throughout
the enterprise, providing developers and users with the
ability to access external data as Smallworld objects.
