Foundation Course

Introduction
The Smallworld 3 Foundation Training course provides a general overview of various parts of Smallworld 3. Most of the topics described in this course are described in much greater depth in other specific training courses. The course provides an overview of the Smallworld 3 by examining the product from the point of view of the various job functions in a typical GE Smallworld project:

  • Operators/Users
  • System Administrators/Supervisors
  • Configurers
  • Designers
  • Customizers
The tuition gives delegates hands-on experience and is illustrated by some examples taken from real applications of the Smallworld 3.

Audience

  • Anyone who requires an overview of the Smallworld product
  • Project managers who wish to understand the capabilities of Smallworld 3 without getting into the details of how to program in Magik
  • Software Engineers who will be following the full Smallworld customisation programme
  • System managers with the responsibility of managing a Smallworld installation

This course is a prerequisite for all of the other courses

Prerequisites
Those attending the course should have some familiarity with using a workstation running under a window-based system such as Windows NT, or OSF/Motif, including the use of a mouse.

Aims and Objectives
After attending this course, students should have:

  • A basic knowledge of the operator interface of the Smallworld 3.
  • An understanding of the ways in which the system can be configured using the various tools provided.
  • An understanding of the ways in which the system can be administered and secured.
  • An understanding of data model design for Smallworld applications and how the Smallworld CASE tool can be used to implement the geographic data model for a customer application.

Duration
3 Days
