Java for Magik Programmers

Introduction
GE Smallworld's Core 3.2 product provides a number of Java libraries that can be used to develop platform independent components using the Java programming language. The GE Smallworld Internet Application Server 1.1 product provides a platform that enables developers to create custom clients accessing spatial data across the Internet. One of the languages that can be used to develop such clients is Java.

This course provides a fast-start to the ways in which Java can be used with Core and the Internet Application Server.

Audience
The course material is intended for the following audience:
GE Smallworld developer who knows Magik, and who wants to utilize Java in conjunction with Core or the Internet Application Server products.

Prerequisites
Attendees should be experienced programmers with knowledge of Magik and some basic knowledge of Java. No knowledge of the differences between Core 3.1(0) SP2 and Core 3.2 is assumed.

The level of Java knowledge that is assumed would be that attained from an introductory course covering topics such as Object-Orientation, Language syntax, Object Basics, Classes, Inheritance, Interfaces and Packages.

Objectives
Following the course, attendees should have:

  • Experience of the using the Core Java APIs to access Core functionality
  • A knowledge of how Java can be used to produce Internet Application Server clients
  • Knowledge of XML technologies and how they can be used in Java.
