Introduction
The Core Spatial Technology Foundation Training course provides a general overview of various parts of GE Smallworld Core Spatial Technology. Most of the topics described in this course are described in much greater depth in other specific training courses. The course provides an overview of Core Spatial Technology by examining the product from the point of view of the various job functions in a typical GE Smallworld project:
- Operators/Users
- System Administrators/Supervisors
- Configurers
- Designers
- Customizers
The tuition gives delegates hands-on experience and is illustrated by some examples taken from real GE Smallworld applications.
Audience
- Anyone who requires an overview of the Core Spatial Technology product
- Project managers who want to understand the capabilities of Core Spatial Technology without getting into the details of how to program in Magik
- Software engineers who will be following the full GE Smallworld customization program
- System managers with the responsibility of managing a GE Smallworld installation
Prerequisites
Those attending the course should have some familiarity with using a workstation running under a window-based system such as Windows NT or Windows 2000, or OSF/Motif, including the use of a mouse.
Aims and Objectives
After attending this course, students should have:
- Familiarity with using Core Spatial Technology as a user.
- A basic knowledge of how to configure GE Smallworld applications.
- An understanding of the main functions of database administration.
- An appreciation of the various facilities available for designing and implementing a GE Smallworld application.
Duration
3 days
Content
The course includes the following modules
Introduction & Overview
These modules give an introduction to the course, and an overview of GE Smallworld products and concepts.
Using Core Spatial Technologies
This module provides an introduction to the common tasks an end-user of the Core Spatial Technology product has to perform and covers topics such as
- Version management
- Scale, styles and visibility
- Objects and geometry
- Making queries
- Geometry, topology and manifolds
- Analyzing networks
User environment
This module shows in general terms how the Application Configuration Environment (ACE) can be used to configure the user interface and the Style system can be used to define the graphical representation of the objects in the system. Other components of the standard system, such as plotter and report definitions, are also introduced at this stage
- Configuring the User Environment
- Configuring Applications
- Configuring Styles
- Creating Plot Templates
Database Administration
This module introduces the concepts involved in administering a GE Smallworld installation
Data Modeling
This module provides an overview of the concepts involved in GE Smallworld data modeling, including the GE Smallworld Case Tool, objects and geometry
Application Development
This module introduces the concepts involved in tailoring or 'customizing' of the supplied system to particular needs
