Amena of Spain selects Smallworld

Mobile phone provider to implement end-to-end network management solution

Cambridge (February 22, 2000) - Smallworld (Nasdaq: SWLDY), the world’s leading supplier of network management software products, today announced the third largest mobile phone provider in Spain, Amena, has selected Smallworld to provide a complete network management system.

Amena is the mobile phone unit formed last year by Endesa and Telecom Italia. Since it began offering service last year, the company has seen explosive growth and is expected to reach 1 million customers, or about 7 percent of the total mobile phone market, by the end of this year.

“Smallworld impressed us with the functionality and scalability of their product set, and with their understanding of our requirements,” said Mar Sanchez, Amena’s GIS project manager. “We are confident that Smallworld is the solution we need to share and exploit spatial information throughout all areas of our business.”

To expand the reach of the Smallworld network management solution, Amena will also use SmallworldWeb, which supplies spatial data to employees via a corporate intranet, to link 500 users in two key call centers with data on elements such as coverage quality and local phone dealers. Smallworld will work with Endesa Servicios, a local systems integrator, to implement the network management system.

“Implementation of this sophisticated network management solution will help Amena provide world-class telephone services and expand its leadership role in Spain’s burgeoning telecommunications marketplace,” said Richard Green, vice president of Smallworld’s Communications Division.

Smallworld 3, an object-oriented spatial resource planning system created by Smallworldwide plc (Nasdaq: SWLDY), enables spatial data to be integrated with a company’s existing systems for work management, engineering analysis, customer care and outage management. It’s also designed to support the rapid development and deployment of software applications that leverage spatial data in new ways.

“Giving companies the capability to use spatial data as a means of improving business processes and passing those rewards on to their customers is what spatial resource planning is all about,” said Dick Newell, chairman of Smallworld. “We’re happy to be playing a role in assisting a new industry player to get off the ground.”
